DISCUSSION

On Saturday, September 23, 2023, the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) hosted their 2023 Gala.  MOLAA expands knowledge and appreciation of modern and contemporary Latin American and Latino art through its collection, ground-breaking exhibitions, stimulating educational programs, and engaging cultural events. MOLAA is the only museum in the United States dedicated to modern and contemporary Latin American and Latino art.

On Friday, October 13, 2023, Centro CHA will present their 2023 Nuestra Imagen Annual Leadership Awards Celebration at the Grand of Long Beach. This annual cultural festival furthers their mission to enrich the quality of life for vulnerable children, youth, and their families. Centro CHA is focused on impacted neighborhoods in the City of Long Beach through civic engagement, leadership development, higher education, employment services, cultural performing arts violence prevention and intervention programs.

On Sunday, October 1, 2023, the Long Beach Public Library Foundation presented their 20th Anniversary Grape Expectations Gala. The Library Foundation supports free programs, resources, and enhancements available at the 12 Long Beach public libraries. The programs and resources vary from Family Learning Center Program, Makerspace Studios, Literacy Support, Helping Students Succeed, and Bridging the Digital Divide.

On Saturday, October 7, 2023, AbilityFirst of Long Beach will present their annual “Rainbows for AbilityFirst” event at the Grand of Long Beach. AbilityFirst is celebrating 97 years of providing programs and services that have helped over 200,000 Southern California children and adults with disabilities - including autism, cerebral palsy, and Down syndrome - to reach their full potential. The Long Beach Center Guild of AbilityFirst has supported the Long Beach Center for over 45 years and has worked hard to ensure the Center receives support for programs, renovations, transportation and much more.

On Sunday, October 8, 2023, WomenShelter of Long Beach (WSLB) will present their 2023 Leading with Love Gala at Hotel Maya Pavilion, in celebration of 46 years of giving hope and help to thousands of families throughout Southern California. The mission of WSLB is to eliminate domestic violence through compassionate intervention, education, and personal empowerment. Due to their efforts, families and individuals in the community will have the awareness, tools, education, and support to form and maintain violence free relationships. WSLB inspires others to eliminate domestic violence in their communities.

FISCAL IMPACT

This recommendation requests the City Manager to provide funds to the Museum of Latin American Art to support their 2023 Gala, Centro CHA to support their 2023 Nuestra Imagen Annual Leadership Awards Celebration, Long Beach Public Library Foundation to support their 20th Anniversary Grape Expectations Gala, AbilityFirst Long Beach to support their annual “Rainbows for AbilityFirst” event, and WomenShelter of Long Beach to support their 2023 Leading with Love Gala. The total appropriation increase of $2,750 in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department will be offset by Sixth Council District One-time District Priority Funds from the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department. The requested action is anticipated to require a minimal level of staff hours beyond the budgeted scope of duties and have a minimal impact on meeting other City Council priorities.
